We can help you return to nursing or reactivate your license.

The NC AHEC RN Refresher Program has been active since the early 1990s. It allows nurses with inactive licensure for five or more years to reactivate their license with the North Carolina Board of Nursing. The program is also available to nurses with active licenses who have not worked in a clinical area for some time and would like to update their knowledge and skills. The Part I Theory Course is hosted through the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill's Center for Lifelong Learning with faculty support from the School of Nursing. The program includes 24 self-paced, online modules and covers various topics from contemporary nursing to medical-surgical patient care. Once completed successfully, the RN Coordinator organizes the clinical experience, which includes 140 hours with a registered nurse preceptor on a medical-surgical unit.

Program registration begins with contacting the regional AHEC center for your county of primary residency. Residents of Alamance, Caswell, Chatham, Guilford, Montgomery, Orange, Randolph, and Rockingham counties should contact Shawn Houck, RN, MSN, RN Refresher Coordinator, Piedmont AHEC, at shawn.houck@conehealth.com or call Piedmont AHEC Customer Service at (336) 832-8025.
