Graduate Medical Education Support
Office of Graduate Medical Education (GME)
Supporting graduate medical education is at the core of Piedmont AHEC’s mission to meet the state’s health and health workforce needs. GME is at the heart of what we do, going back to the beginning, in 1974, when the NC General Assembly approved and funded a plan by the UNC-Chapel Hill School of Medicine to create a statewide network of nine AHEC regions.
We provide stipends to Cone Health, a community-based teaching system located in Greensboro, and we help support the residency programs necessary for primary and community care, such as family medicine, internal medicine, pediatrics, and psychiatry.
Cone Health sponsors ACGME-accredited residency programs in family medicine, internal medicine, and psychiatry. Cone Health also supports an ACGME-accredited fellowship program in Sports Medicine. In addition, they collaborate with UNC to provide a Pediatric Primary Care Track residency.
AHEC residents are more likely to stay in North Carolina than non-AHEC residents, helping to reverse the trend toward shortages and the uneven distribution of primary care physicians in the state’s rural areas.
